How does our program enter a team to MSBL?

Attend the Board meetings. The first Board meeting is held in September as early as the first Monday following Labor Day. At this meeting, you will receive information concerning entry procedures and deadlines together with an outline of the material required to submit an entry.

Which teams are eligible for entry?

Teams must be sponsored or sanctioned by a town or municipal recreation department or athletic club, a YMCA, or Boys and Girls Club. Teams that are members of an independent athletic club not having such affiliation may be eligible. Such teams should discuss their eligibility with the Board prior to submitting an entry. The Rules and Regulations describe the eligibility requirements. The Rules and Regulations can be viewed by selecting the Documents link in the navigation bar.

Is there a cost to enter MSBL?

The 2008-9 per team fee is $160.00.

How is the fee determined and what costs are included?

The amount of the fee is recommended by the Board at the September meeting at the time the financial report for the preceding season is presented together with a budget forecast for the current year that describes the proposed budget and fee. These fees are used almost entirely to pay the costs associated with the conduct of post-season competition including gym rental, game officials, awards and other incidental costs. The cost of post-season competition has exceeded $18,000 for each of the past two years and is projected to again exceed $18,000 for 2007-08. A small portion of the budget covers administrative expenses of MSBL operation.

What is the season calendar?

The pre-season consists of three or four meetings beginning in September with the final meeting on the first Monday of November. At that meeting, all entries, will be confirmed and each approved team will be assigned to a division. Rosters are due in mid-November and the first games are scheduled to begin the week following Thanksgiving. The regular season concludes during the first week in February. The post-season typically spans two weekends and the week in between. Finals in each division occur the weekend prior to the first weekend of winter break. No games are scheduled during Christmas vacation.

How many games does each team play?

Teams are required to provide one home game each week. Schedules ordinarily include one home and one away game for each team each week as possible. The total number of games varies by division but generally each team plays at least 12-14 regular season games. Each team is also guaranteed at least 2 tournament games during the post-season. Teams are free to enter holiday tournaments during the Christmas vacation as no regular season games are scheduled during this period.
